Blue & I have been collaborating for a while now. I had the pleasure of doing her second publicity photoshoot at my art studio. The experience reminded me that being a photographer is something I will always carry with me, credentials in tow.

We also worked together to create some awesome puppets.

I just made the fun-time cardboard city as a sneak preview to her next project. shhh...

...and 1nce, I cameo'd in her music video. We've been spotted in Chicago at Urban Art Retreat, BlackStar Books & Cafe in New Orleans, and at Gya- here in St. Louis.

Watch out, eventually we will arrive in your town.

What happened at the Urban Bush Women's Summer Leadership Institute?

Last month, Chinyere and I made it to New Orleans! Thank you all who donated money and body to help us get there! Next year, I hope for more Yeyo Arts Collective members to apply!

Here are the thangs that really sang to my heart, throughout the ten day training and twelve day trip! It is hard to know where to begin...

I am very thankful to meet so many wonderful women, with a shared vision. I felt extremely safe, through out the learning opportunity. There was no point in the entire experience that I felt judged, tracked, or generally disliked. I was honored. This is something that I do not find to be the case in my day to day life, but now that I have seen it: it shall manifest!

I really enjoyed the People's Institute for Survival and Beyond. I am most impressed with the "beyond" portion. As we know, survival is just the beginning... I have been reconsidering how socialization has truly affected the way that I hear and take info in. My thought process needs to be detoxed!

Here are some truths that spoke to me in my professional life:

-Book learning does not trump life experience.

-There are No Mirrors in My Nana's House. (haha)

-Reconsidering a "needs" analysis" in my gatekeeping practices.

-Internalized racial inferiority and its many manifestations.

-Change comes from the bottom up, inside out.

-Whiteness is a political Process. What is race in antiquity?

Lastly, I loved their power analysis! I've been fancy'ing some leadership trainings in the past two or three years and this power analysis has golden crown... by far. St. Louis better recognize! Simply: you must include the have and have nots, and just not in economic terms.

At the end of all of that I had my favorite part of the day: The joy Chinyere possessed by "making it rain" with all 80+ of us. For many of the St. Louis art educators, we do it all the time as a group activity in classrooms. At UBW SLI, the power was in the room!

Entering, Building and Exiting was a great discussion, as well. I have always carried the bad taste of privileged, grad-student, temporary, havoc-filled, patting the top of my head art program stew in my mouth. I've never quite been able to digest it. I've seen many of the communities I belong to, feel the backlash of it. I've seen student's dissappointment and I've seen neighborhood's true history get sucked up by it. St. Louis is too trusting of these collaborations, and should be more aware when we see them coming. Even the term "outreach" is loaded with the assumption that those facilitating and administrating the program has more power. Do you really? Usually not.

Four commitments for this type of work that I am recommitting myself to:

-The process should be liberating
-It should validate what people already know.
-Do not present myself as an expert.
-Who I serve should be a part of the planning process.

The great thing is that Urban Bush Women work and live on these principles.

..and so there was a lot of creative processing, mostly through movement. Which was moving in itself. There was lots of singing too. Did I mention that everyone is great? Folks were happy! Can you believe it? With that many folks, it was nothing but love and joy- all the time! There was a culminating performance, that I was able to share with some of the homies: Tearria, Siphne and Tshepitzo.

In a nut shell: A huge growing edge for me.

In the picture are the purple cohorts! yay! We were a "smaller" group that worked together, processed, checked in, and created with. There were two other cohorts, as well.

A Shot Away premiered in New York in April of this year. This is the first national stage reading of the play which is also a fundraiser for the YWCA St. Louis Regional Sexual Assault Center.

Description of play: Tina Priest is dead. Is it suicide? Or, is it because, just weeks before, this American soldier reported she had been raped on her Army base in Iraq. Her mother and twin sister are left many doubts and unanswered questions. Priest is not alone; six other soldiers recount their experiences as survivors of military sexual trauma. A Shot Away is a docu-drama about sexual assault in the US military; based entirely on interviews with American soldiers who have been sexually assaulted by their "fellow" soldiers. In their own words, the soldiers explore this ongoing epidemic in our military and examine what can be done to address and prevent instances of sexual assault and rape in the military.

I am pleased to announce that I was accepted into Urban Bush Women's Summer Leadership Institute!!!! Exciting.

Chinyere and I are doing multiple fundraisers to assist us in travel expenses and childcare. Our goal is $1000.00. I know that seems like a lot, but I think we can do it. Here is how you can help:

Summer CAMP= Constructive Summers for Teens

Jenny, Judy & I are facilitating a great summer program for youth in Middle and High School. So far we have gotten to know each other, took a fieldtrip to Circus Flora, created self portraits and identified key issues to combat through the arts. We have been working hard for two weeks...

Right now I am really excited about a project I am working on with a couple of other cool folks. Simiya, William P. and I are planning to build some greenhouses around town. Yay. We are in the beginning stage, and would like to expand throughout the community. As many people know, I have a special interest in the Northside.
We are getting a great deal of our supplies from ReStore, as the staff there have been awesome and knowledgeable (especially Andy and Eric.)

The Great Migration was the movement of over 7 million African Americans out of the Southern United States to the Midwest, Northeast and West. In contemporary culture we find that many African Americans have moved back to the southern states of the U.S. for various reasons. Consistent to that of the generations before us, is the need for better economic, cultural and social environments, which many African Americans have reclaimed in states such as Tennessee, Georgia, and Mississippi. Both artists will explore their experiences, and understanding of this occurrence in our culture.

The migration series is a surreal contemporary look at a migration that has taken place the last 20 years where families and descendants of families that left the south almost half a century ago are returning in search of a better life, identity and history.

Dail Chambers is a community based, studio artist working in various mediums. She studied photography at St. Louis Community College Florissant Valley and received her BFA from Memphis College of Art in Clay, with a minor in Art History. Her artwork is centered on African art, women's issues and social constructs. She shows the process of each work, as a telling history to the viewer.

Chambers has curated numerous exhibitions, and founded the AIDS Project in Memphis Tn. She completed CAT (Community Arts Training) Institute fellowship while building and facilitating programs in the St. Louis area, many of which are located in the surrounding area of her art studio. Most recently she has founded Yeyo Arts Collective, a small collective that operates a gallery with fine crafts and hosts community arts programming.

Everything is A Circle

I moved back to the mainland almost (but not quite) ten years ago. First & 3rd stop: St. Louis! Because of the rich culture I grew up idealizing, such as the ville, the old courthouse, etc. I knew the Lou would either make me or break me. Through time, it has done both.

I came here believing that I could springboard my career as a young black socio political photographer (i.e. the new gordon parks) and make $$ doing so. Not! Yet, I gained a strong community college program experience, a beautiful daughter, and many learned lessons.

Taking these experiences with me away (and back) to St. Louis has not only shedded me of my ego, but also gave me more insight into how to link personal and political experience... and then, how to link all of that into my art(work.)

One thing that has remained is my drive. One of the most rewarding happenings for me in 2010 was finding a single page of my old journal. Not much to the eye, but what was most fulfilling: looking into my past and seeing my goals, before being a mother, before being an artist.

Wow! Who am I??? I am still creating her, yet I am already she who I wish to create. It is funny, in one part of the list I recall my desperation for survival so much that I considered joining the reserves. (Sike! on that one!)

Fresh out of high school, I had minimal immediate family support, my mother still lived in Hawaii, other family I knew mostly as distant handwritten correspondence... and the world was still moving.

I had no clue at that time that all my lists, big ideas and images were only the beginning. I was too worried about working to be able to afford a semester's worth of classes. That goes to show (me) to not worry about the now but to keep moving forward despite it all.

After ten years, I am proud to say that almost all of the list was accomplished!!! What I thought would only take me a week has turned into a decade and I am grateful for that time. I would have never guessed at that moment I was writing my own history and manifesting my livelihood into fruition.

The Migration Series, a collaborative exhibition by Carl Moore and Dail Chambers will be opening at the Vaughn Cultural Center January 22nd from 3-5, with a meet & mingle at Gya directly thereafter, please come celebrate with us. I will be posting a formal invite on the blog soon!

The family tree was commissioned by a wonderful supporter at the beginning of the fall. I am grateful for the opportunity.
The work I did for this commission opened my life up to new visions and new artworks. The process is so important for me, that I hate when the end is near.
Yet, I am glad it went to a family that would honor their vision and the work created for it.

The indigenous holiday event will be this upcoming weekend BUT definitely listen in to this segment. Dail Chambers is a ceramic sculptor and installation artist. She is a jewelry maker, and craftswoman. She most recently founded Yeyo Arts Collective and Gya, an arts based cooperative business in St. Louis. The Community Gallery and Fine Craft Shop holds classes, exhibitions, cultural events, discussions, and tours. The space is run by Yeyo Arts Collective, which is made up of a well-ranged group of women artists. Dail Chambers believes that through the arts we can creatively voice ourselves, represent our communities, and reshape our society.

Playing Catch Up

Over the past few months, I have been busy busy BUSY!
Gya by yeyoarts collective has been going well. Formally and professionally streamlining community work is difficult! It's well worth it though. Its been extremely enjoyable curating the space for all of our beautiful artists.
Yet, I feel bad because I miss 19th and the studio. Although I sneak in time to go to the studio, I am unable to deeply engage in my artmaking at the rate I'd been during, lets say: February, March. I am glad that I can keep my private space and instead create my public functions in a new venue. At Gya, I do not have to worry so much of over exposing my process, or wondering if someone will step on a nail, or my art.
Outside of all that: "gya, Gya GYA" talk I have had an eventful and thoughtful summer. Going to the Us. Social Forum in Detroit opened my eyes to possibilities in my artmaking moreso than any other happening. I am still unraveling all that I collected and learned.

San Franciso did not spark my creative juices as much, but still a good trip. I've been a member of the Women's Caucus since attending community college. I surprise myself that I am still involved. I further surprised myself by keeping my focus long enough to invest time and commitment to the organization. I wonder the perspective of my fellow members who has seen me, my daughter and my art grow . (?) I enjoy many of the relationships that has grown out of WCA, but i look forward to more diverse artists and art groups being involved. Hopefully I can contribute to that happening through exhibitions. I am the local exhibitions chair as well as the VP of Development for the National Women's Caucus. wowzers. The title is just that, but really the two things I believe I've dedicated myself to in the position is getting resources to help the needs of the organization and building relationships with artists (again) outside of WCA who shares the same vision. As far as the trip goes, it was cool. Nothing hard hitting, but a good experience.

At the local level of WCA a good art friend Erica Popp and I have just started a mentorship program. The only thing holding us back from the program growing is committed artists to help in the mentoring. So, if you are an artist and you are interested please email me dailchambers@gmail.com

Wall Ball went very well. My work was purchased by a gentleman from the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra. I have to thank Emily Hemeyer for inviting me or the connection would have never happened. Also her panel discussion at Urban Art Studios went very well. Mike Mansini was my co-speaker and it was wonderful to hear him speak about his experience as a participant of the Inquiry to Action Group that I facilitated back in April. I look forward to seeing more artwork from that group!

Hmmm, what else is going on? I am curating an exhibition in Chicago in December. Im definitely looking forward to that. urbanartretreat.org

Oh- and the hands down worst professional experience I've ever had, has been with Diversity Awareness Partnership's Summer Art Program this year. The experience for me was a friendly reminder how rascism is still alive in the small occurences of daily interaction, how stereotyping is still prevalent, especially when people in position of power, self admittantly do it because of my "looks" and their "feelings" and how independent artists are so often seen as employees. I hope the young people got the opportunity to benefit from the glue, fabric and yarn that I donated the program. Hopefully they will research the artists I showed them during the lecture and gallery visit. But, the question of the year is: "How do I look unapproachable???" I hope the administrators running the program from Metro Theatre Company and DAP really are able to be honest with themselves, others and when dealing with people in the future, because when a staff person explains to you how your actions have been discriminatory your response should not be that the staff member is expected to forgive you.

Outside of that horrible experience. Life is good. Art is coming and I look forward to the future. I will be updating images soon.

Crossroads Convening

Does anyone remember my *top of this blog* installation I am the Crossroads? Well, it's funny I mentioned it because uhh... being in St. Louis puts us all at that point. How fitting for the convening to also take this position... that intuitive duende, standing at the edge of action, when life chance and artistic expressions leaps out of your every spirit... crossroads.

I had the opportunity to blog for the convening that took place at the Regional Arts Commision St. Louis. Hands down the best "conference" I have ever attended. How fulfilled I am when laboring over new initiatives and the renewed aquaintance that I've had with my studio again.... thank GAWD! I thought i'd lost myself there for a moment, not creating, not being inspired. i know its a regular season but I hate the droughts when they come...

Back to the Convening: Theaster Gates and Robert Longyear was a very necessary discussion. yes. The Handmade community action workshop. yes, yes. and all of the wonderful happenings... oh yesss. great: and I ended the experience with a new hair bead and two paperweights to hold my stack full of papers. Goodnite.

March has been one of the best months of my life!!!!

Lets see... we started off with (un)seasoned, a craft show I hosted at my studio. The day was beautiful and everyone that came out to support was a cool set of folks. I appreciate how much everyone was excited to visit. It truly set the pace for the rest...

That following Friday I recieved a resolution from St.Louis Alderman Shane Cohn. How wonderful to be acknowledged amongst your peers! It was a wonderful experience for me, my family and friends...

& now I am on the National & local board for the Women's Caucus of Art. Locally I am the exhibitions chair and Nationally I will be the Vice President of Development and on the International committee... I look forward to my new responsibility and can't wait for dedicating more to the organization.

lets see... then there is the iTAG and my inclusion to Literacy for Social Justice Research Group. I am really excited about this because it is a direct lineage of why I work so hard. Art & Education shapes our world. We need to be more involved in it's processes so that we can empower ourselves and navigate these environments with more ease and confidence.
The iTAG is going wonderful. The group is open, critical thinkers who do not mind thinking outside of the box! (For one group, literally) I was really impressed with todays session. will blog more about this experience later...

& GYA arts, gifts and wellness will be officially open on May 1st at our location 2700 Locust! YeyoArts Collective is amped and ready! We are actually still accepting consigners, so please email me if you are interested. A portion of our sales goes back into programming needs so that we can freely teach classes such as candlemaking, design work, art classes, and empowerment services. We definitely look forward to the future, as we have a long month ahead of us. This past weekend I had a wonderful time at RAC's Crossroads Convening. This was basically an art conference that will smack you back and ask for tax! It was great, refreshing, renewing and inspiring. The experience has led my thoughts on my art and mission to so many new outlets, I cant wait to dive in.... later. ok, waaay later.

All ages and people welcome – young people, students, teachers, community members, artists, grandparents! A test-driven curriculum pushed the arts to the margins of our schools. Arts based projects at the forefront of our educational planning secure a strong future for our students.

In this Inquiry to Action Group (ItAG) – Art, Education and Democracy – we will collaborate to create art in order to take a deeper look at our personal and community environment, a key part of social growth and understanding. Dail Chambers, teaching artist, will guide participants as they work together to create free-standing sculptures and participate in discussions focused on: art's role in historical social movements; multicultural arts; contemporary art activism and arts based collaboration in classroom activity.

Through our inquiry, creation and action, participants will find ways to transfer basic art techniques & processes learned into their work as citizens, parents and educators. No previous art experience is needed. Participants are asked to bring one small to midsized item that is attached to an experience, place or memory. The requested item will not be used in making of artwork. People should commit to attending 4 sessions.

About the Facilitator : Dail Chambers is a community based, teaching artist. She studied photography at St. Louis Community College Florissant Valley and received her BFA from Memphis College of Art in Clay, with a minor in Art History. Chambers’s artwork is centered around african art, women's issues and social constructs. Most recently she has completed her Community Arts Training Institute fellowship. Chambers has curated numerous exhibitions, and founded the AIDS Project in Memphis TN. She is currently collaborating with National artist Carl Moore. Both artists will share the topic of "Moving Back: Our experiences living in the American "South," generations after the Great Migration. The exhibition is to be held in St. Louis at the Vaughn Cultural Center, January 2011. Her two Spring 2010 shows include From the Center Now!, a national exhibition juried by Lucy Lippard, held in Chicago Ill; and Art as Activism juried by Yolanda Lopez, held in St. Charles, MO.

This four-session Inquiry to Action Group is offered FREE by the Literacy for Social Justice Group with the support of the Doerr Center for Social Justice. I have recently been teaching at U.City elementary schools with afterschool. I am grateful for the opportunity to work with such bright and colorful young people. It has been wonderful to see the students grow in attention to detail and using materials... but i feel as though we are just beginning.

I've come to be excited about my weekly visits. I like to hear them talk about their work too: At one school one of the students drew an image of himself, with long reaching arms, and at the top of his page he wrote, "I can see, even without eyes." He scratched out the eyes, too. How beautiful, and he's in Kindergarten!

I know that it is a beginners all inclusive temporary drawing class, but we are just starting to get comfortable! the young people (k-6th) have created some amazing work ! thats what is difficult with short term programs... "as soon as we get cooking, the microwave beeps." We as creatives and educators need to find ways to build more long term programming. Commitment and constancy means a lot to young people...

As a new year rolls through, I am celebrating artistic growth, accomplished goals and rejuvenated energy.

In 2009 there were quite a few milestones in my art career. I participated in my first panel discussion with the Women's Caucus of Art, I have sustained my studio and had quite a few successful shows, including my 1st solo exhibition at Nu Art Metropolitan Art Gallery. I am very pleased with all that I have accomplished. I am especially grateful for those who've collaborated and supported me throughout the year in my many and various art endeavors.

2010 is going to be a great year! Look out for many upcoming events. HOMEGROWN is coming up every weekend in January by Playback Theatre Workshop. You can see hints of my work in the stage props and photography. FROM THE CENTER NOW is coming up juried by Lucy Lippard at Woman Made Gallery in Chicago. Also, the new year brings a great new relationship with PORTFOLIO GALLERY, as I'm the newly announced program coordinator in addition to my educational instruction roles. I also have numerous collaborative projects coming up that is so exciting! So be tuned.

Jackie called and was like: "hey, i need a pitbull mask, is that something you can do?"

4 days of creative rigor landed me a new & beautiful relationship with Homegrown and playbacktheatreworkshop. I am elated.

As a teenage photographer my novel -like dreams of changing the world with each documentarian click was the only motivation for labeling myself "artist." After I moved on to art school I was convinced that this was an unachievable goal. A concept or process can not be bound by a medium. I ended up moving on to other and almost any medium it took to express my voice. creating for HOMEGROWN, has been a resurgence of my originating purpose and I am thankful.

I began the mask inside out. After determining the form of a pit it was all fun from there. I sculpted the paper mache mask, and it took 3 days to dry! *anxiety kicks in. ..*so I turned to the good old trusty blowdryer, lol.

As an artist I always attempt to balance the dual aesthetics of both Western culture and African. For Clayton (the pit), there was no difference. Guided by traditional masks of Mali and other African nations, I applied my 2d element in representation of 3 dimensional forms. By adding this stylistic character I am attempting to not only heighten the depth of the mask but nod thanks to our inspiring ancestral spirits.

I miss Clayton already. Yet, just like every birthing, I know he must live... and in this fact I find joy for his purpose and journey.

HOMEGROWN will be an unmovable force in the culture of STL that no one should miss. Please come out and be a part of a long overdue and greatly needed conversation. The play will run through out January, each weekend. Check below for more details....

While addressing racial diversity issues is inherent and organic in our region, the storyline weaves an authentic patchwork of scenes which show how societal differences in the region became a true challenge to the relationship of the 2 people involved. Lucy Lippard is a key international, contemporary, feminist art critic and writer. I first became aquainted with her writings in college. She is the juror for the upcoming exhibition "From the Center" hosted by the National Women's Caucus of Art and Woman Made Gallery in Chicago, which I entered. I am pleased to announce that out of 450 artworks to select from, My work "Comfort Blanket" was of the select 75 pieces to be included in the exhibiton through catalogue and online gallery!

Yay! This honor is a major accomplishment in my artistic career and will hopefully be followed by many more to come.

the summer time is coming to an end... and i wish that it wasnt! one of my favorite highlights was working with summer camp students at Third Baptist Church on Grand. They were a great bunch! I swear there are so many visually gifted children it's ridiculous. Thank you Portfolio Gallery! The image above is one of their projects: tile making! yay. and can you believe it, we made the tiles in one day (an hour and a half at that!)... dont worry, I can barely believe it myself. They did so well! Cant wait til next summer...

i am glad i participated. i almost participated with a local group that i belong to, but got caught up in my solo show. these are most recent works still in progress. lately, i have been drawing more in preparation for some larger installations. drawing larger has been a breath of fresh air! the size of the canvas can really contain a whole idea and holdback a river of them.

visual poetry is on my mind. all the time.=) metaphors and movement filled verbs too. juxtapositions of ideas are being put to test on paper... and i like it. i will definitely repost these two works as i work it out...

conversations, feedback and questions are always welcome...

also, i am seeking out some shows that are interested in my installation proposals as well as some large scale drawings and small sculptures. if any one has any suggestions, please contact me! i dont mind if you post comment or email me! please pass along, too... or just keep me in mind=)

I wanted to do these more in depth. Yet, there is an urgency of need for basic knowledge on contemporary african american artists. I know I posted a like blog the other day but here are two well known African American artists. These are just a small bit of a beautiful culture of artists who are building their own aesthetic. So, for those who ever feel like sharing please, please do. For those who are already familiar: it's always nice to revisit.

Allison Saar- the daughter of Betye Saar (who we know for the found object sculpture of the 60's: The Liberation of Aunt Jemima.) I have Lunaseas: Sea of Fecundity posted. She has one work in the trees at Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis. (lol. the poster for my current exhibition looks a lot like the one I have posted. I am sure very different in person and context. As a ceramicist I do wonder how many ways a clay mask can be made... I hope infinity and one.

Kerry James Marshall- Who can't love Kerry? He has work at the St. Louis Art Museum. If I am not mistaken the image I have posted and a basketball print(? I will have to get back to you on that one but I am pretty sure?) His work is huge. He is usually always responding to/representing african american subject matter.

Google them to get more aquainted with their work.

Most artists pick two options when dealing with galleries. They either:

a. run as far away from the gallery as possible. (knowing that in the art of business the gallery houses the worst of them: those who will hang your work upside down, those who will not give you appropriate representation, and those who will flat out not follow good gallery conduct.)

b. bear it and smile (and half the time possibly even enjoy it a little bit.) (knowing that any opportunity to sell is a good opportunity for them)

i tend to position my self at a "a.5;" -business agreements sparingly made with a scrutinizing eye and an open heart.

as many people already know: i am already half jaded. a few months ago a gallery director hung my work sideways on the wall without any effort into paying attention to the right way it was to be displayed

and now:

a gallery has forced me to take down four pieces in the middle of my exhibition. why? because they didnt want them damaged is the response i recieved. yet, i spoke with and confirmed on the three different occasions the nature and the curation of the show with the performance in mind, ending with the director complimenting not only the work but my business minded character. obviously convenience withstands both of those good traits in this circumstance. a performance is coming up in the same space as my work.

as an artist i say: taking away vital parts of a body is deadly. a person with no arms or legs if you will. one person even made the analogy: what if someone went to play the piano only to find out that 6 or 7 keys were missing.

people have to learn to understand and deal with all forms of art. would i have had this same issue if it were a painting hanging on the wall? or if the gallery recognized the direct link between my work and the artist statement? i think not. the work is made of crocheted copper wire and therefore very hard to "damage." The only way for people to understand how to interact with the work is through exposure.

...and even if the gallery director made his "executive decision" it is not my responsibility to go back to the gallery to take it down. (or put it back up again) it was his decision to breach our agreement of dates.

how disgruntling that even in the galleries one still has to worry about the integrity of artwork and vision, as the fine arts gallery is supposed to be a safehaven.

regardless, its a lesson learned. I am constantly (and gracefully) striding forward. i have included images of the works for those to see. i must add: they are best in person. the studio is always open on tuesdays and i would love feedback as always.

most often i ask myself, "now how am i going to make something that i relate to and understand..."

as we already know there is not enough black imagery in media, around us or made by us. many do not know that most catalogued depictions of african american art up until recently had been interpreted by non black people. wild, that we would leave such an important task to those who really do not have a complete understanding of what my life looks like.

so when it comes to artmaking i simply answer myself by making what i am sure i know about. sometimes it does has to do with blackness in some form but not always in content. sometimes in representation, sometimes in political response. it depends on so much.

one of my favorite artists is african american born mexican artist elizabeth catlett...many ideas i thought i knew she has mastered way ago. i am thankful for her leadership in not only african american art but political art and aesthetic. here are a few images of her work. i have seen her work in person and must say that you "ain't seeing nothin'" unless you see them in person.

support those who have trekked the journey that you now follow. i think the main way i stand against misrepresentation and discrimination in the arts is by upholding those works who really speak to me, and I must say: Elizabeth Catlett and I are having an entire conversation she will never even know about.

after a long week/ weekend... it feels good to be back making art. life can not be surrounded in business, it will drown.

these images are where i left off last week. already, i have developed these more, but i am not going to be able to document every little thing. the clay mask hanging on the wall has been completely altered. i feel as though this should be much more volumous. and the collages are wonderful and fun. its odd/interesting though that i noticed another artist-friend who is also stitching up holes in her artwork.

for me the void is a reminder- balance: physicality and our intangible selves. the collaged images on top are mass pro. images of skin: representation of us (the many we are...) and the organic shapes are people. the stitch is just that. a mending.

My Next Door Neighbor is a Vacant House

There's an amazing photo essay by Camilo Jose Vergara on Slate. Its about decaying paired houses in Camden, New Jersey. If you know anything about Camden, you know its one of the poorest/decaying cities in America. What he did was take pictures of homes that are paired but one is abandoned/vacant and the other is occupied. The contrast is incredible. Revisiting

Today I have really been studying one of my first artworks: this photograph from High School. Although the print quality is "okay," what I am most interested in is the composition that I chose. Right after this photograph I changed my compositional style per instruction. I think though that maybe I did not explore all of my options... I am going to try to incorporate the composition from this photograph into some of my collages that I am currently working on.

for instance, i have mostly collage here. it seems this is what i have been most drawn to lately. but i am still working out an idea of a sculptural piece and preparing for that. in the mean time i keep working... these are on varying levels of completion but i like how they are building up.

Dail Chambers || Bio
Dail Chambers is a mixed media artist, grounded in photography and ceramics. Topics of her interest include post colonial discourse, women’s issues and African American studies. Her works range from fiber arts to nature based installations, with many artworks in between. She has shown her works in traditional and nontraditional exhibitions in St. Louis, Memphis, Philadelphia, Chicago and Virginia. She founded and curates an annual benefit called The AIDS Project” and is a member of the Women’s Caucus of Art and Nia Artist Collective.

She received her Bachelors of Fine Arts in Studio Arts, concentrating in Ceramics with an Art History minor in 2007. She began this journey as a photography student at St. Louis Community College Florissant Valley. Throughout her academic career, she has been awarded the Board of Trustees Scholarship at STLCC, the Susan DeGarmo Award at Memphis College of Art, and various student achievement awards including student government nominations, grants, scholarships and merit awards.

i dont know why i am always drawn to the figure(s). its a lot of times proof of existence, thats all i need. its a wonderful thing that a good friend archived this and resent it to me because i no longer have this diptych in my possession.... which is best, there is no point to making art if no one ever sees it.
